Fundamentalist vs. Pentecostals vs. the Cross | 1 Corinthians 1.27-31

For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written,

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.”

Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.
1 Corinthians 1.27-31

So good. And also really appropriate for this age. The fundamentalists want knowledge and certainty, and the Pentecostals want experience and signs. But we preach Christ crucified.

  1. Your tone has a condescending smugness towards “fundamentalists and Pentecostals.” That tone is typically veiled and I wasn’t sure it was even really there until I read this post. Why, all of a sudden, is the veil dropped, I don’t know, but I do have to say that those you chide include a great many with a far more extensive education than yours and that of those who taught you. The fact that you sound a lot like an atheist I know begs the question, from whence comes your confidence?

    • Sigh….

I’m talking about those particular groups as unique cultural movements. Individuals will fall into different places. The people of those movements are absolutely smart, sincere, faithful, and lovers of God and others. It still doesn’t change the historical situations that started the movements. You can just look at the history of either of those movements and the cultural and historical situation that gave rise to them to see that what I said was fair.

And really? You’re appealing to education? Educated people are on every side of every issue. I don’t think that’s ultimate, but if you do, and you want to keep score, then the Ivy League Divinity schools would agree with what I said above, and the most educated people in the world are consistently on the other side of issues than you are, including politics, science, economics, and theology. And yet you don’t seem to care much when they disagree with you.

And lastly, to be absolutely frank, how dare you use this thing you simply disagree with me on to compare me to an atheist? Seriously. I so deeply disagree with you on so many fronts and find so many of the things you profess and stand for to be an absolute mockery, perversion, and embarrassment to the gospel, and yet I would never question whether we are brothers in the faith. At the end of the day, no matter how much I may agree with an atheist on any number of things compared to you, I still stand with you in love and fellowship. I cling to Christ and His Resurrection, and yet because of your offense at misunderstanding my tone and meaning, you still want to question my allegiance? It’s this tendency to think you have the right to simply declare who’s “in” and who’s “out” that gives Southern Baptists a bad name and demeans the Gospel of God.
