The church is elected to responsibility, called to be the church to and for the world–not in order to save it or conquer it or even transform it, but to serve it by showing what redeemed human community and culture look like, as modeled by the One whose cultural work led him to the cross. In short, we’re sent out to be martyrs, witnesses of the Crucified One. In that way, we win by losing.

But there are now more Christians in the world than ever before, both in total numbers and as a percentage of the human population. There is now more Christian propaganda in existence than ever before, both in electronic and paper form (including Bibles). There are now more Christian schools and universities. More Christian radio and TV stations, websites and blogs. More Christian missionaries than ever before.
And yet the human world is becoming more and more insane every day, especially in the USA. And what is more, the leading edge vectors of this now universal insanity are right-wing and/or so called conservative Christians, especially in the USA. Especially in the form of the Gospel Coalition with which James Smith is associated.
